Required Plasticizing Throughput

Compare the shot’s required throughput with the press recovery window and rated plasticizing capacity.

Example starting values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with your measured, quoted, or job-specific inputs before relying on a result.

Inputs

Inputs

Range: at least 0.001 lb

Enter the complete molded shot mass in lb, including discharged runner/sprue material. Do not enter only the part mass for a cold-runner mold.

Range: at least 0.001 s

Enter the actual time available for screw recovery before the next shot is needed. Do not automatically use total cooling time; recovery may overlap cooling, but machine timing and process sequence determine the usable interval.

Range: at least 0.001 s

Use the measured steady-state time between equivalent points in consecutive cycles. This full-cycle duration is the denominator for average material throughput; it is separate from the recovery window above.

Range: at least 0.001 lb/h

Use the press manufacturer's plasticizing-throughput rating for the same resin or a validated equivalent, screw, and operating conditions. Do not treat a GPPS or other reference-resin rating as a universal rate.

Interpretation and limits
Required throughput is an average based on full-cycle material consumption. The recovery-time estimate assumes the entered rated throughput is achieved continuously during the available recovery interval. Actual screw recovery depends on resin, screw design, screw speed, back pressure, feed and melt conditions, and machine timing. Confirm the rating basis and validate on the press; this result does not confirm melt quality, residence time, pressure, or machine suitability.
