Gate Diameter from Fill Rate and Target Velocity

Use shot volume, fill time, and target gate velocity to screen an equivalent circular gate size.

Example starting values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with your measured, quoted, or job-specific inputs before relying on a result.

Inputs

Inputs

Range: at least 0.0 in^3

Enter the volume that actually passes through this gate during filling, not necessarily the entire machine shot if multiple gates or runners share the flow.

Range: at least 0.0 s

Use the fill interval associated with the entered volume. This model uses one mean flow rate and does not model a velocity profile.

Range: at least 0.0 in/s

Enter a design velocity selected from material/process knowledge. The calculator does not recommend a universal value or check shear/pressure limits.

Result

Equivalent gate diameter (mm)

Mean flow rate (in^3/s)
0.6102
Equivalent gate area (in^2)
0.03100
Equivalent gate diameter (in)
0.199
Design scope and limits
The result is the diameter of a circular opening with the same mean area/velocity relationship for the entered flow. Real gates may be noncircular and require checks for shear, pressure drop, freeze-off, vestige, mold filling, material viscosity, and gate style. Validate the design with the material, mold, and process analysis.
