Barrel Turnover / Residence-Time Estimate

Estimate the average time resin turns through the barrel from operating inventory, shot size, and cycle time.

Example starting values are prefilled to demonstrate the calculation. Replace them with your measured, quoted, or job-specific inputs before relying on a result.

Inputs

Steady-state process inputs

Range: at least 0.0

Use measured or manufacturer-supported melt inventory at the actual screw position. Maximum nameplate shot capacity is only a proxy and may not equal actual barrel inventory.

Defaults to lb; output uses lb and seconds.

Range: at least 0.0

Include all cavity parts and discharged runner/sprue mass for one cycle. Use the same material basis as the barrel inventory.

Defaults to lb; may differ from the inventory unit.

Range: at least 0.0 s

Use measured steady-state cycle time, not just cooling or recovery time.

Model limitations
This is an average turnover estimate from entered barrel inventory, shot mass, and cycle time. Actual resin age varies through screw channels and with recovery/cycle overlap, cushion, check-ring behavior, and machine operating state. Compare with the resin supplier’s temperature/residence guidance and validate using machine/process knowledge; this output is not a degradation prediction.
